LIA Student Lighting Designer of the Year: Oliver Hrubiak & Frank

Sponsored by Anglepoise, OSRAM, and The Lighting Industry Association, the Student Lighting Design Awards allow students to gain valuable knowledge about the lighting industry, whilst using their creative skills to develop new lighting products. With LEDs being embraced as the light source of choice, the finalists raised the bar again in 2012.

Oliver Hrubiak won for his striking LED table lamp, Frank, assembled from steel, ash, and aluminum fittings with a unique braided-cable power cord. Hrubiak studies furniture and product design at Nottingham Trent University.

Simon Terry, Judge and Innovation Director at Anglepoise Ltd., commented on the winners: “Inspiring designs, and any of the top three could have easily landed the top spot. Great to spend time with young people with a creative instinct on the one hand and a clear respect for materials and processes on the other. I am sure that they will go on to great things.” Second and third place went to Craig Foster and Stephanie Casse, respectively, both from  Nottingham Trent University.

The awards were presented by LIA President Rune Marki (OSRAM), pictured above with the winning finalists and Peter Hunt, LIA’s Joint Chief Executive.

Finalists were chosen from over 100 pieces of flatwork and invited to present a working prototype to the panel of esteemed judges:

  • Peter Hunt , Lighting Industry Association
  • David Ellis, OSRAM
  • Simon Terry, Anglepoise
  • Fiona Elliott, Elliott Associates
