Speirs + Major have received a coveted International Dark Skies Award from the International Dark-Sky Association for their work on London’s Olympic Park and Athlete’s Village. News of the award, which was announced at the end of last year, was embargoed pending the lifting of the restrictions on publicity.

The award was given for work carried out by Speirs + Major in their role as ‘Lighting Design Advisor to the Olympic Delivery Authority’. Their input directly resulted in helping to reduce lighting levels across the park and thereby limited light pollution and other impacts to the environment.

“A lighting strategy already existed when we were appointed to act as Lighting Design Advisor in early 2009’ said Director Mark Major. ‘Part of our brief was to see if we could further improve upon the lighting levels that had already been determined, particularly in the southern area of the park. We worked closely with Secured by Design, the Accessibility Group and Sustainability Group to see how this could be done. We based much of work on what we had already agreed through the lighting masterplan for the Olympic Athlete’s Village where we had proved that lighting levels could be much lower than originally anticipated by the brief – but without compromise to safety and security.”

“We agreed that the lighting levels to the whole park would be set to a single base standard of S1 which would be then temporarily raised to around CE1 during the Games only. This was still much higher than in the Olympic Athletes Village where we predominantly used standards such as S2 and S3. Given on-going security requirements however it was understandable that the authorities wished to keep things a little brighter in the main areas. Despite this we helped achieve a further reduction in energy and light pollution across the piece.”

Indeed, more than simply providing a set of lighting design guidelines, facilitation was at the heart of the Lighting Design Advisor role. Speirs + Major drew on their experience in understanding the wider social, contextual and branding issues to bring about key changes to the park-wide lighting. By example, Speirs + Major worked alongside architects Allies and Morrison to develop an additional layer of temporary lighting for the Games. This consisted of ten metre high multi-headed columns that would raise the lighting levels throughout the park during Games-time but leave them at lower levels for the Legacy.

Speirs + Major Masterplan During the Games

“The lighting to the principle routes and main southern concourse had already been designed by Sutton Vane Associates. We worked to address how the other large temporary concourse areas within the park would be illuminated for 2012 only – but in a manner that then allowed the scheme to easily be adapted as part of the Legacy Transformation.”

Other initiatives agreed as a result of Speirs + Major’s input included character work such as unifying the colour temperature across the park, implementation of a common procurement strategy leading to the final specification of the luminaires and pushing forward the overall control strategy.

In addressing the IDA Award Mark Major added:

“This award should be for the whole project. As Lighting Design Advisors we performed a specific role advising the ODA and LOCOG. This included addressing fundamental issues such as lighting standards, colour temperature, public art and the site-wide procurement of lighting equipment and control, coupled with working at a high level across all parties to ensure this was delivered with consideration to a wider strategic plan. Many other lighting designers were also involved in the success of the public realm. The primary areas were designed by Sutton Vane Associates as part of their work for the landscape design team Hargreaves/LDA, the bridges and loop roads were designed by ARUP, the stadium island concourse by Buro Happold and of course the Olympic Athlete’s Village by ourselves. It is a testament to the collaborative nature of the project that so many lighting designers worked together to make the experience of the public realm such a success.’

One of the main fundraising events for these charities, By Design Day focuses attention on the various ways that individuals can support these two organisations which are dedicated solely to assisting entertainment technology professionals in need. Fundraising can be a personal donation or through an organised collection. Many designers support the day by voluntarily giving a day’s royalties to one or both of these charities. Light Relief assists those involved in the UK lighting industry while Behind the Scenes aids professionals based in the US and Canada working in any area of the entertainment technology industry.

By Design Day 2013 has the full backing of a host of award-winning designers across a broad range of disciplines, including Neil Austin, Gregg Barnes, Ken Billington, Paule Constable, Wendall Harrington, Howard Harrison, Don Holder, David Korins, Derek McLane, Rob Milburn & Michael Bodeen, Ken Posner, Jennifer Tipton and Hugh Vanstone, along with Light Relief’s co-founder, Rick Fisher.

Light Relief Day was first organised in the UK six years ago to honour the memory of the charity’s founder Tony Gottelier and quickly gained support. Two years later the US and Canada joined in, to raise funds for Behind the Scenes. Now By Design Day is supported internationally with donations from designers with productions all over the world. To date Light Relief has awarded more than £50,000 in grants to help lighting professionals and their families, while Behind the Scenes has issued over $325,000 in grants to professionals working in all disciplines.

So – put Wednesday 24 April 2013 in your diary – and visit www.lightrelief.org.uk or www.estafoundation.org/bts.htm for more information

Philips in partnership with Cadw, the historic environment service of the Welsh Assembly Government, is to relight 18 of the region’s most impressive castles with predicted energy savings of 50%, equating to saving 92 tons of CO² annually, using state of the art LED lighting technology.
Thought to be the biggest venture of its kind, the project includes Harlech, Beaumaris, Caernarfon and Conwy which, together, form a prestigious World Heritage site.

Adoption of the latest LED design innovation has ensured that the multiple challenges of energy reduction, enhanced visitor enjoyment and the health and safety of those working on site have all been met.
As Neal O’Leary, Cadw’s Programme Manager explains, “The heritage of Wales is very rich and diverse, shaped by past generations, highlighting where we have come from and enhancing our quality of life. Some of these monuments are of international importance and have justifiably been given global recognition as World Heritage Sites. However, this historic environment is also a fragile resource and therefore we have an obligation and duty to manage them in a sensitive and sustainable way for future generations to enjoy. We are therefore pleased to be working with Philips to ensure that our castles are shown to best effect, but also that we have done so in a way which is sustainable as well.”

Often known as the “Land of Castles”, Wales welcomes millions of visitors to its sites every year. Impacting on the refurbishment programme, the castles have to remain open to the public whilst work is carried out, therefore minimum disruption is an essential factor. Philips built this criterion into its proposal by ensuring that the existing lighting would be replaced on a point for point basis. This also avoided the unnecessary complication of requiring the work to be overseen by archaeologists.
Caerphilly Castle and Castle Coch are two of the first sites to be relit. Both very different in style, the lighting treatment has nonetheless been sympathetically applied to each.

Built on medieval remains, the fairytale Castle Coch, now enjoys over 60% reduction in power consumption using Philips eW Reach LED floodlights situated in the same positions as the former fittings. With its ability to emit two separate beam angles from each fixture, the lighting picks out the architectural detailing of this romantic vision of the Middle Ages. The main stone façades have been softly illuminated whilst the upper turrets have been accentuated to give greater definition.
Shades of neutral white and warm white light have been used at Caerphillly Castle, one of the largest medieval fortresses in the UK. Capable of projecting light some 500 feet, the eW Reach is amply equipped to scale the impressive elevations reaching the full height of the external walls from moat level. Discreetly placed on both the projected and recessed fascias the fixtures illuminate the arresting structure ensuring that the principal façade is equally imposing at night time when viewed from the public highways. The other facades have also been treated with neutral white light but to provide contrast the internal castle walls are washed with warm white to enrich their colour and texture.
“The project has taken social and environmental responsibility to its core proving that energy efficiency and continued visitor enjoyment of the rich history of Wales can go hand in hand without compromise.” O’ Leary sums up.

Vienna, Austria – At the first international sustainable energy conference hosted by the “Regions of Climate Action”(R20), Philips and R20 emphasized the benefits of rapid adoption of intelligent and energy-efficient LED lighting infrastructure for sub-national government organizations (States, Regions, Provinces, Counties and Cities).

“LED technology has proven its reliability and now is the time to accelerate adoption. By using LED-based lighting, municipalities can enhance safety for citizens, reduce public energy bills and free up resources to support economic growth.” said Eric Rondolat, CEO of Philips Lighting.

“Cities, states, and provinces are where the real action is when it comes to energy efficiency projects,” said R20 Founding Chairman Arnold Schwarzenegger. “We look forward to having Phillips join our building and street lighting efficiency campaign and help to make everyone an action hero in building sustainable communities and fighting climate change.”

At the conference, Philips and R20 jointly announced the launch of an “LED Street Lighting Toolkit” in the course of Q1 2013 that will enable sub-national governments to act quickly to improve street lighting with LED technology.

Recent studies [1] have indicated that improving the efficiency of general electricity use from the present rate of 1 percent per year up to 3 percent per year would reduce the need for capital investments in public energy infrastructure by up to 1900 billion by 2030, providing medium-term public budget relief.

Cities are responsible for 70 percent of global energy use. Lighting of public spaces (streets, parks, offices, schools) is responsible for 50 percent [2] of a city’s energy bill. LED lighting thus represents a significant opportunity for city councils to cut their power bills and ease their stretched balance sheets.

Equally important, LED lighting can help municipalities create safer cities – and the benefit of LED lighting in this respect has been recognized by citizens. A global LED trial [3] by The Climate Group in 12 cities determined that citizens prefer LED lighting, with 90 percent supporting its rollout in cities, citing increased feelings of safety.

In order to achieve an accelerated transition to efficient lighting, UNEP seeks to stimulate dialogue among government authorities, the private sector, multilateral institutions, technical institutions and civil society.

The Global Efficient Lighting Forum is a unique opportunity for key stakeholders to: exchange best practices; discuss the current progress and challenges of transitioning to more advanced lighting technologies; examine the benefits of a transition to higher efficiency lighting (for example, using light emitting diodes and controls); and, create a consensus regarding the technical, policy and financial measures necessary to accelerate a worldwide transition.

During the event, a global roadmap will be developed to enable countries to make a quantum leap to the most energy efficient and appropriate lighting systems. Opportunities, methodologies, tools, and concrete actions will be identified to support the achievement of such a transition.

At the end of the meeting, Partners and key stakeholders will develop a Resolution that is expected to reflect an international consensus for the need to accelerate the phase-in of efficient lighting globally, across all sectors, as a means to reduce lighting-related carbon emissions by 2020. A global status report on efficient lighting will include topics and recommendations from the Global Forum and will be published in late 2013.

More information about this invitation-only event will be posted on the en.lighten website as it becomes available.

Edgar Langen, a lighting expert with extensive experience in LED Lighting and associated electronics, has been appointed General Manager of Lumotech, part of the Nualight Group.

He will be responsible for all lighting electronics at the organisation which specializes in LED drivers, LED boards, PIR detectors and other lighting controls.

Edgar Langen brings a strong track-record of LED Lighting experience to Lumotech. Having worked with Philips Consumer Electronics, Philips Digital Networks and Philips Software, he joined Philips Semiconductors as General Manager of Business Line Solid State Lighting. Edgar Langen was part of the spin-out into NXP Semiconductors where he assumed business responsibility for all Lighting products, including drivers for Linear fluorescent, compact fluorescent, HID and LED light sources. Since 2009, he has had a global responsibility role with Future Electronics as Director of Future Lighting Solutions. Edgar Langen is Dutch and has an M.Sc. in electronics.

Langen commented: ‘I am truly excited to join the Nualight Group and assume responsibility for the Lumotech business. Lumotech is one of the few ‘hidden gems’ in the European LED lighting landscape. Over the last 35 years it has relatively quietly been perfecting its technology and now has a product portfolio that is world class and unique in quality and usability. With the excellent support of Nualight and its investors I am committed to make Lumotech a recognized leader in LED lighting electronics.’

Established in 1978, Lumotech uses LED technology innovatively in lighting design and application. Its LED drivers excel in term of energy-efficiency and deliver a competitive edge for customers in a fast-paced market. Lumotech drivers are robustly and intelligently designed to perform at the highest level throughout their lifetime. All drivers are specified with high power factor, low inrush current and various forms of dimmability. Lumotech’s design centre is continuously inventing and innovating to push performance to the next level, working with the industry to power the transition of all lighting to LED technology.
